Syzygy Memory Plastics founders met in the first year of the TI:GER program where they began by taking 2nd place in Georgia Tech’s Business Plan Competition in 2008.They entered again in 2009 and won the Most Fundable Award with $30,000 in services. They are now approaching the $1M mark with funding from friends and family, $150,000 GRA grant and $650,000 from an NSF SBIR Phase I and II grants. The company is based on a shape memory polymer that adapts to body heat for a more comfortable and custom fit ear plug. Currently, three of the original team members are operating the company, with Walter Voit (PhD 2009) leading product development as CTO while working as an assistant professor at University of Texas at Dallas ;Brent Duncan (MBA 2009) is CEO, and Justin Helsby (JD 2009) is the COO and legal counsel.
